The Northern Railroad was begun in 1854 under the organization of Thomas W. Demarest and John Van Brunt. By 1959, service ran from Piermont, N.Y through Nyack, Grandview, Piermont, Tappan, Norwood, NJ, Closter, Demarest, Creskill, Tenafly, Englewood, Ridgefield Park and on to Jersey City, NJ. The station in Tenafly was designed by Daniel Topping Atwood and built in 1872. Commuter service was stopped in 1966 and the station is now owned by the Borough of Tenafly. Tenafly's station was the most attractive on the rail line. CSX Rail now uses the track for freight. Plans are underway to bring commuter service back to Tenafly in the coming years.
